Returned on Wednesday from a 5-day jaunt to Vieques, a small island off Puerto Rico, with my girlfriend. I can’t say enough about the place. We’d show up to a beach and find ourselves alone. We’d snorkel in five feet of water and find massive schools of darting silver fish, spiky sea urchins, and even an wee barracuda who liked to keep an eye on us as we swam through his territory. We’d drive down the rutted roads, passing free-range horses that the locals considered vermin, and find ourselves a mile into a dense glade.

To be less melodramatic, it was beautiful and sunny and relaxing as all hell. And since it’s not Christmas yet, which means it’s not prime time, traveling there was relatively cheap. If you have the means, I highly recommend visiting Vieques.

All this is to say, I’m posting some pictures from my vacation, so deal with that. If you can stomach some cutesy couple shots and shirtless Scrabble, you can see more pics here.

I know the Times’ intentions were positive, but you can’t wrap three races and several nationalities into a neat little gift and slap a bow on the package. What they should have done was simply add the race-specific ideas to the other gift guides. Maybe a white person would like their child to read about President Obama or Sonia Sotomayor too. You know the little high you get when you put on your favorite dress and look in the mirror? That “damn, I look good” feeling? It’s like that. A constant need for that. But instead of looking in the mirror, I look in people’s eyes. It’s the need for my brain to release oxytocin, that juice you feel when orgasming, the best man-made drug there is. I am really proud of this interview I did with Jennie Ketcham, who is currently appearing on “Sex Rehab With Dr. Drew.
